Background of the Study
Urban speech in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, is a dynamic arena where language continuously evolves. Neologisms—newly coined words or expressions—serve as markers of linguistic innovation and cultural adaptation. This study examines the morphological processes that generate neologisms in Lagos urban speech, reflecting socio-cultural shifts and global influences (Femi, 2023). Rapid urbanization, technological advancements, and cross-cultural interactions contribute to a fertile environment for morphological creativity. Speakers in Lagos often blend elements from indigenous languages, Nigerian English, and international lexicons, resulting in unique word formations that encapsulate modern urban experiences (Adesina, 2024). Through comparative analysis, this research investigates the morphological mechanisms—such as affixation, compounding, and clipping—that underpin neologism creation. It further explores the extent to which these new lexical items influence everyday communication and identity formation among Lagos residents. The study not only documents emerging trends in urban speech but also provides insights into the broader processes of language change in response to social and technological transformations (Akinola, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the prominence of neologisms in Lagos urban speech, there is a dearth of research focused on their morphological innovation. Previous studies have primarily addressed lexical borrowing and code-switching without a detailed examination of how new words are structurally formed (Olagoke, 2023). This gap limits the understanding of the underlying linguistic mechanisms driving lexical change in urban contexts. Furthermore, the rapid pace of urbanization and globalization in Lagos necessitates updated research to capture ongoing morphological developments. Without systematic analysis, educators and language planners may struggle to keep pace with these linguistic changes, potentially affecting communication effectiveness and cultural representation (Uche, 2024). This study seeks to fill this void by providing a comprehensive examination of neologism formation in Lagos urban speech.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document morphological innovations in Lagos urban speech.
  2. To analyze the processes involved in neologism creation.
  3. To assess the impact of these neologisms on everyday communication.

Research Questions

  1. What morphological processes give rise to neologisms in Lagos urban speech?
  2. How are these new lexical items integrated into daily communication?
  3. What factors drive the formation of neologisms in urban contexts?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the dynamic processes of morphological innovation in Lagos urban speech. The findings will contribute to the understanding of language evolution in fast-paced urban environments and inform linguistic theory, education, and policy planning regarding contemporary language change (Femi, 2023; Adesina, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the examination of morphological innovations and neologisms in Lagos urban speech.

Definitions of Terms

  • Morphological Innovations: New forms and structures in word formation.
  • Neologisms: Newly coined words or expressions.
  • Urban Speech: Informal language used in metropolitan contexts.
